Advanced Superconducting Magnet Development

A) Magnet Characterisation & Test facility
Design of an accelerator magnet and its accurate magnetic field measurement is very important for its successful utilization in an accelerator laboratory. It is proposed to procure the latest software for magnet design and develop a facility for carrying out different tests of the magnet including the magnetic field mapping. The magnet test laboratory will house instruments and standards for characterizing magnets. It will be equipped with instruments required for energizing some standard magnets and carry out magnetic field measurements.

B) Development of Cryo-cooler based High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) Steering Magnet
A conventional copper based steering magnet for high rigidity beam becomes very bulky and difficult to integrate in beam line if large steering is required. Most recently, commercial availability of long length high temperature superconductor (HTS) tape along with availability of high power cryocooler has given privilege to develop compact magnet operating at temperature of 20 K or even higher since cooling power of refrigerator is much larger than at 4 K. Although many prototype devices using HTS wire have been developed these applications are presently rather limited in accelerator and beam line facilities. Therefore, we propose to develop cryocooler assisted prototype compact HTS Steering magnet to be useful to put the beam at the target accurately in K500 superconducting cyclotron and will give new dimension to in-kind HTS magnet development technology as well. Further, we propose to develop a unique magnetization test facility to characterize the superconducting short sample, transient loss, etc. related to magnet development. The budgetary cost implication for the proposal is estimated to be six crores. The project is expected to be completed within the year 2017.
