HBNI Activities

The Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), one of the premier nuclear science and accelerator technology centres of India is a Constituent Institutes (CI) of Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), Mumbai. In addition to its own programmes of building the latest state of the art accelerators, the Centre provides R & D facilities to various branches of nuclear sciences. A wide spectrum of research programmes on Accelerator Physics, Experimental and Theoretical Nuclear Physics, Physics with Rare Ion Beams & Nuclear Astrophysics, Hadronic Physics, Quark Gluon Plasma Physics, Material Science, Radio Chemistry, Nuclear Medicine, Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics etc are carried out at the Centre. VECC is also part of the International Collaboration at ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory & Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Geneva. The Centre also conducts one year pre-doctoral orientation course in physics for HBNI students

Accelerator Physics, Physics with Rare Ion Beam and Nuclear Astrophysics, Experimental and Theoretical Nuclear Physics, Hadronic Physics, Physics of Ultra Relativistic Heavy Ion Physics & Quark Gluon Plasma, Experimental High Energy Physics, Material Science, Radio Chemistry, Nuclear Medicine, Electronics, Computer Science & Engineering, Cryogenics, etc.

Students with M. Sc. (Physics) who qualify in JEST, NET and GATE are called for personal interview at VECC for the final selection for the one year predoctoral course in physical sciences. On successful completion of the predoctoral course the students work towards their Ph D degree under the supervision of one of the faculty members.

VECC presently conducts Ph.D and M.Sc (Engg.) programmes only for the DAE employees and M. Tech projects for those who have successfully completed the one year Course work from the BARC Training Schools and join VECC. Minimum qualification for admission to the M.Sc. (Engg) programmes is B.E/B.Tech or equivalent from any recognized university and for PhD, it is M.E./M.Tech. The admission to the Ph.D. programme is by way of interview. The admission to the M.Sc. (Engg.) programme for the candidates recruited through the Training School of BARC is by way of interview and for those who are not recruited through Training School is by way of the written test followed by the interview. These candidates will have to undergo one year course-work. The extent of the course-work for the candidates from the Training School is decided by the relevant committee.
